Introduction to the Middle School

The Bentley Middle School is comprised of Grades 6 through 8, and has been located on the Oakland “Hiller” Campus since 1969.

The academic program at Bentley’s Middle School promotes the academic, social, and emotional growth of its students by expanding on the foundation established in the Lower School. Students transition from the self-contained single-teacher classroom structure of the Lower School to the increasingly independent multi-classroom, multi-teacher model in the Middle School. Navigating this period of rapid growth, students build on the learning skills established in the Lower School to progress from concrete to analytical thinkers.
Our teachers guide students through hands-on projects, open-ended questions, and challenging problems, encouraging students to think critically and develop excellent communication skills. Students acquire study skills in every class. Students master mathematics, learn to think scientifically, become proficient in world languages, develop strategies for physical and emotional health, work collaboratively with peers, and express themselves intelligently and confidently in the arts.
Middle school students see themselves as writers, scientists, mathematicians, linguists, artists, musicians, athletes, and historians, in order that they may become engaged citizens of the world. Vital electives enrich the core academic program with opportunities in the arts, debate, engineering, athletics, and academic preparation. Bentley Middle School students become enthusiastic learners who live a deep intellectual life, and they leave our eighth grade well-versed in the fundamental skills and content they need to meet the rigorous challenges of Bentley’s strong, specialized Upper School program.
