On March 16, Bentley hosted its second Distinguished Lecture. The Distinguished Lecture Series, launched this past October, brings exceptional writers, thinkers, scientists, and artists to Bentley for evenings filled with curiosity and insight. Through these special events, offered to our Bentley families and the regional community, we hope to share the broadest perspectives about the values and world we share.
On the evening of Thursday, March 16, Gopnik shared her research and wisdom from her recent book The Gardener and the Carpenter: What the New Science of Child Development Tells Us about the Relationship between Parents and Children, with an engaged audience of over 150 guests, many of whom were first-time visitors to the Bentley community.
Parents and educators learned to rethink the idea of “parenting” as a prescribed process with a particular “outcome.” Sharing research about cultural attitudes, neuroscience, and psychology, Gopnik showed a compelling path parents may follow toward shaping learning opportunities for children (and students) in ways that enhance learning and growth. After the event, Gopnik shared conversations and signed books for guests, and invited parents to learn more about her lab’s research. Learn more about Gopnik’s work and research.
