The Bentley Upper School is comprised of Grades 9 through 12, and has been located on the Lafayette Campus since 1998.
Bentley’s Upper School builds on the strong foundational elements of the Lower and Middle Schools, including discipline, curiosity and the value of the life of the mind. Bentley’s motto “Scire Desidero” (“I desire to know”) guides the teaching and learning of every student and faculty member, exemplifying the best of a secondary school, liberal arts education. Upon entering the Upper School and through graduation, students take courses that are rigorously challenging yet developmentally appropriate. The core curriculum aligns with and exceeds the recommendations made by the University of California System. Additionally, students choose a program of study that guides and inspires each person as they gain key content knowledge and develop critical 21st century skills: collaboration, problem-solving, adaptability, initiative, information analysis, and imagination.
The hallmark of a Bentley education is defined by “doing” and real world applications in the courses taught by our exceptional teachers. Throughout the school and co-curricular programs, an emphasis on creative engagement and authentic intellectual work abounds. Students explore their interests outside of the classroom in the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Program, speech and debate, experiential service learning, culinary arts, language study, student leadership, the athletic arena, performing and visual arts, and many other options. Opportunities and passions are created by students who revel in each other’s presence within a community of mutual respect and kindness.
The Promise of a Bentley School education is that students will be citizens of the world, thoughtful, inquiring, and entrepreneurial problem-solvers. Academically enthusiastic, principled, and vibrant, Bentley School graduates bring their joy for learning, leadership, and sense of self to college, professional and graduate schools, and their workplaces. The Bentley Upper School experience culminates in close friendships, lessons learned, and a deep affection for the school.
